Ballywalter Park (Springvale)

  • Earlier Houses: An early 19th century house on the site called Springvale was demolished in the mid-19th century, when the current house was built. Elements of Springvale were incorporated into the current house.

Built / Designed For: Andrew Mulholland, mayor of Belfast.

House & Family History: Ballywalter is particularly noted for its two-story hall, carried on Doric columns on the first floor and Corinthian columns and pilasters on the second floor. The hall, which is 60 feet long, is lit by two stained glass domes and features a stone imperial staircase with an ironwork balustrade.

Comments: Ballywalter is considered Ireland's finest 19th century Italianate palazzo style house.
