Castlemilk House (Cassilton Tower) (Cassiltoun)

  • Earlier Houses: Castlemilk House was built around the 15th century Cassilton Tower, where Mary, Queen of Scots, supposedly stayed in 1568 the night before the Battle of Langside.

House & Family History: The Glasgow Corporation (City of Glasgow) acquired Castlemilk in 1939 and used the House to accommodate evacuees during World War II. After the war, Castlemilk House became a children's home, a purposed it served until 1969. Around 1970 the House was demolished; a children's play area occupies the site today.

  • Garden & Outbuildings: In the 1950s a housing development, which encircled the House, was erected on the Castlemilk Estate. A small section of the former estate is managed today as Castlemilk Park and Woodlands for the benefit of the local community. The late 18th century Grade B-listed Stableblock was restored in 2007 and now serves as local housing offices, community facilities, and a nursery.
