Earlier Houses: The first house on the site was probably a medieval castle, which was rebuilt in the late 16th century century. This house was demolished in the 19th century, when the new house, the primary focus of this record, was built.

House & Family History: In the early 19th century a new Tudorbethan style house was erected on the Castle Shane Estate. This house, notable for its four-story tower, burned in the 1920s during the Troubles. Much of Castle Shane Estate, including the ruins of the Castle, is today owned by Coillte, the commercial forestry business owned by the Irish government.
