The house from "Morris's Views of Seats," circa 1875.
An 1829 engraving of the house from "Neale's Views of Seats"
Earlier Houses: An earlier house, rebuilt by Smith of Warwick the Younger, was demolished circa 1805, after the current house was completed.
Built / Designed For: 1st Marquess of Cholmondeley
Collections: Hans Holbein the Younger's "Lady with a Pet Squirrel and Starling," which had been at Cholmondeley Castle since the 18th century (later coming to Houghton Hall, Norfolk), was sold from Houghton to The National Gallery, London, at Christie's in March of 1992 for £10 million.
Garden & Outbuildings: The Gothic-style castle, which stands romantically on a rise above the lake, is surrounded by sweeping lawns and a variety of mature trees, including chestnut, cedars of Lebanon, and oak. The gardens surrounding the castle provide a lovely mix of color and height, with walks around the lake, complete with a picnic site, children's play area, and rare breeds of farm animals, including African pygmy goats and llamas, in addition to rabbits, chickens, and aviary birds. There is also the Laburnum Grove, the Rose Garden, and the Temple Water Garden, which sports a small lake full of giant koi carp.
Chapel & Church: There is a private chapel in the park.
