Glenfeshie Lodge (Glenfeshie Estate) (Glen Feshie)

  • House & Family History: In 1967, the trustees of Sir George Macpherson-Grant of Ballindalloch offered the Glenfeshie Estate for £100,000 to the Nature Conservancy Council, forerunner of Scottish Natural Heritage. When the NCC declined, it was sold for £105,000 on March 3, 1967 to Lord Dulverton, via West Highland Woodlands Ltd. Dulverton sold it on November 16, 1988 for £2,632,000 to John Dibben, via Bargeddie Ltd. On November 18, 1994 Dibben sold it to Will Woodlands, a registered charity, for £4,713,600. On January 7, 1998 the Estate was sold again, this time for £6 million, to Danish businessman Klaus Helmersen, via Glen Feshie Estate Ltd. In December 2001, Helmersen sold Glenfeshie to a fellow Dane, Flemming Skouboe, for £8 million. On December 31, 2005, Skouboe sold it to his compatriot, Anders Holch Povlsen, chief executive of Bestseller A/S, the Danish fashion company. Povlsen placed Glenfeshie into the ownership of Wildland Limited, who operate the Estate today. Queen Victoria supposedly stayed at Glenfeshie Lodge on multiple occasions.

Comments: Glenfeshie is frequently called "the jewel in the crown of Scottish mountain estates."

  • Garden & Outbuildings: The Estate today comprises 42,000 acres, much of which is wilderness, including remains of the ancient Caledonian Forest. Glenfeshie is frequently cited as a model of an environmentally friendly estate. The area was a favorite of Queen Victoria and also provided the setting for Sir Edwin Henry Landseer's 19th century painting "Monarch of the Glen."
