Hall I'th'wood (Hall i' th' Wood) (Hall in the Wood)

  • Earlier Houses: There were a number of earlier houses on, or near, the site of the current house.

House & Family History: The core of Hall I'th'wood is timber-framed with a stone flagged roof. During the 18th century the house was the seat of Samuel Crompton; it was here that he designed and built the first spinning mule. Hall i' th' Wood was bought and restored by Lord Leverhulme in 1899 and given by him to the City of Bolton in 1900. The name of the house derives the regional dialect and means "Hall in the Wood."
