Heligan House

  • Earlier Houses: There were at least two earlier houses on, or near, the site of the current house.

    House & Family History: During World War I Heligan House was requisitioned for use as a convalescence home for British officers. During World War II the House was used by American forces, who practiced the Normandy landings on Pentewan Beach. Heligan House was converted to flats in the 1970s.

  • Garden & Outbuildings: In 1990 the 200-acre Heligan Garden was leased to Heligan Gardens Ltd. and became Europe’s largest garden restoration project.

  • House Listed: Grade II

  • Past Seat / Home of: SEATED AT EARLIER HOUSES: Arundell family, 12th century. Sampson Tremayne, 16th century. SEATED AT CURRENT HOUSE: Sir John Tremayne, 17th century; The Rev. H.H. Tremayne, 19th century; Tremayne family here from 1513 until 1970.
