House & Family History: The Charlton family has owned land at Hesleyside since the mid-13th century. Barbara Charlton's memoirs of life at Hesleyside during the 1840s was published as "The Recollections of a Northumbrian Lady" in 1949 by her grandson. The House is noted for its Staircase Hall, which has an imperial staircase with elaborate cast iron balusters and an Adam style plaster ceiling.
