The house from a circa 1905 postcard
Earlier Houses: A number of earlier buildings on the site have been incorporated into the current house.
House & Family History: Originally a Saxon hall built for the lords of Deane, the site is known to have been used by the Romans (fragments of Roman masonry have been found in the grounds). The house, as it now stands, is primarily Jacobean, with a 5th century Saxon crypt and undercroft. In 1612 Charles Bridgman purchased Littledean and probably added the North Wing. The Pyrke family purchased the house in 1664. Duncombe Pyrke installed mullioned and transomed windows and gables on the Entrance Facade in 1852. In 2003 a small bit of the house at one end was divided to make a separate property; it was listed for £695,000 in February of 2003. Littledean is reputedly one of the most haunted houses in England and is possibly the oldest occupied house in the United Kingdom.
