The house from a 1910 postcard
Earlier Houses: There was a manor house here in the early 13th century, the remains of which were probably incorporated into the current 16th century house.
House & Family History: During its heyday in the 1520s and 30s Rochford Hall was a large, turreted manor surrounded by a moat and noted for its fine Great Hall (the house has been greatly reduced in size and the moat is long gone). The most famous owner of Rochford was Anne Boleyn's father, Sir Thomas Boleyn (created 1st Viscount Rochford in 1525 and 1st Earl of Wiltshire and Ormonde 1529), who inherited the estate from his mother, Margaret Butler, and later gave it as a wedding gift to his daughter, Mary, when she married William Stafford in 1534. Mary Boleyn died at Rochford Hall in 1543.
