The house from a 1787 hand-colored engraving
Earlier Houses: There was an earlier 13th century house on, or near, the site of the current house.
Built / Designed For: 1st Baron Latimer
House & Family History: In 1483 (during the minority of the 2nd Lord Latimer) Snape Castle was occupied by Richard III's wife and mother. Catherine Parr, later famous as Henry VIII's sixth and last wife, lived here (before her 1543 marriage to the king) as the wife of the 3rd Lord Latimer.
Chapel & Church: The chapel at Snape boasts a particularly rare feature: a painted ceiling created by Antonio Verrio. In the early 18th century the 15th century chapel roof was removed and replaced by a plaster ceiling, onto which Verrio painted a fresco depicting scenes from Revelation 12:7–12. Most unfortunately, the ceiling is in very bad condition today, as the chapel was used for many years during the 19th century to store grain. The Pre-Reformation chapel was purchased by the Diocese of Ripon and Leeds in 1926 for use as a chapel of ease for the Church of St. Michael at Well; services continue to be regularly held there today.
