House & Family History: In an astonishing line of continuity, the Surrenden Estate only past by inheritance between 1066 and 1928 (it was never sold). In the early 20th century Henry James was a regular visitor to Surrenden. The house was the setting for Gore Vidal's 1987 novel, "Empire."
